In what way 'tailor'?

My first advise would be backup.

Twice.

And again.

Now tell us what kind of ideas you want ...

$40 grand ? Sorry to hear that.

It is always important for both parties (developer and client(s) to sign an agreement of costs and timescales.

It is of mutual benefit.

for the Client :

you know what the objective is and the final look

for the developer:

you don't get phone calls in the morning ..."hi , Ive just since this cool 250mb flash animation I want for my site. thanks bye."

5 days later....

"Hi again, its me.......I also want my site and 250mb flash animation to work on my wrist watch web browser (which has a mono screen and 1mb of ram)."

Always agree upon phases (and pay at the completion of each phase).

Say you have 3 phases with a third paid at the end of each phase.

This is always useful as you can test and review how the project is going.

Agree on what should happen if things are going to plan (cost /time).

A statement which shows who owns copyright for the code /content on the site and who is responsible for the site.

The target browsers /systems the web site should work with.

Who the site's audience is .

Typical user scenarios.

Customer A wants to buy two books.

This is the steps he would take.

.

.

Good Luck and hope this was useful to you and others.

Without looking at your data, no one can tell you how simple it is going to be or not be. Theoretically, it could be simple as changing a few field names but you are probably going to want a import script written in PHP that will read your old database, massage the data properly and insert it into the proper tables in OSC. This way if there are special dependancies, weird table structures or there is binary data stored, you can account for it and you would have less to lose.
