To begin with, I want to say thank you to all those who did answer questions I had asked.

For a month straight, I had nothing but problems. I had originally installed osC 2.2rc whatever version it was.
It didn't work from the get go. I deleted the entire osC after spending hours and hours recreating every single image
that came with the program. I installed 2.3.1 not once but 3 times. The major problem I was having was any orders
that were made, never got stored in the admin so I could never see what attributes customers were buying.

At that point, I had done 3 fresh installs so I decided to try another cart. I uploaded Zen which is somewhat the same
as osC but even it wouldn't work. I contacted my host Servage.net about the issues. They danced around the bush like
you wouldn't believe and claimed it's not them and that there had to be a bug in the scripting. They told me to do a fresh install
again but use the latest version. I asked for a refund after 3 fresh installs and a different cart fresh install.

I get up this morning and they had installed the older version on my host. The 2.2rc whatever it is and told me to proceed setting it up
and if it didn't work, then it "may" be a problem with their database. I did as the asked....

That's 4 fresh osC installs and one Zen cart. Non of which worked. Not only did the problem stay the same with the version
they installed, it won't even send out emails when someone creates and account or buys smething.

I just asked for a refund again.

If they refuse to give a refund after all that... I'm not sure what I will do but I'm letting everyone I can think of know
of this. Servage.net now is known to me as sewage.net and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone... ever

Erik,

A few years ago I was with a host that kept on suspending my service due to (they claimed) high CPU usage. Because these suspensions were likely to affect my store sales I wasted little time in finding another host (recommended by someone), initially moved my store over and then the rest of my site, I had no more cpu problems everything I had and was using on my site worked without problems.

I lost out on 6 months paid hosting on my original host, but I reckon I would have lost far more if I hadn't moved at that time so to me the move was worth it.

In e-commerce we can't afford to stay with a bad host

The first host I was with was "OK", but due to frequent server downtime and support that was robotic, I moved on. When I say robotic...I really wondered about that.

I'd do the on line chat thing and it would go...

Host: Hello Steve, thank you for contacting us. I am Frank, how can I help you?

Other than the support guys name, this was the same opening every time....and Frank apparently is a common name in India. :-" Anyway.....

So I'd respond with the issue I was having and get:

Host: I am sorry for your inconvenience. Please give me 3 to 5 minutes to look into this further for you.

Again, the exact same response every time.

Then they'd disappear...finally when they'd come back to chat....

Host: I will have to refer this to second tier support. Is there anything else I can help you with?

Geeez Louise.....

Anyway...enough was enough and I moved on.
I am not a professional webmaster or PHP coder by background or training but I will try to help as best I can.
I remember what it was like when I first started with osC. It can be overwhelming.
However, I strongly recommend considering hiring a professional for extensive site modifications, site cleaning, etc.
There are several good pros here on osCommerce. Look around, you'll figure out who they are.

Hosting can be a night mare, finding a decent host is getting even more difficult now with reseller accounts all over the 'net meaning anyone can set up as a host.
Best advice is to research and not go for a years free hosting, or only$1.99 per month for unlimited space etc... Without really looking at the host's feedback or Google them to see any feedback, its better to pay a bit more for a satisfactory service you can rely on than a quick cheap hosting service that is poor.
As almost everyone starts off shared hosting look for a decent host with great feedback given by customers, there are also many comparison sites for host's but beware they do not only work on commission.
A bit of time researching now will save you a lot of pain later and possibly money!

That's for sure. When I was in my "look for a new host" mode I did a good bit of searching, mainly via Google to see what was out there.

My former host had issues with server down time and somewhat inept/robotic/go through the motions type support. In my research I found that what appear to be different hosts are actually "affiliates" using the same support service. I found one company that looked kind of good, but when I visited their test site I saw that their support was exactly the same as the company I wanted to leave.

I asked the support person from this site I was checking out if they were somehow tied into my former host and the person acknowledged they were "affiliates".

So I kept looking and eventually came up with a decent host.

I had the same problem. However when I fixed the problem with the OScommerce script I got alot of hackers to my web site.

I was unable to clean up the hackers messes. I changed hosting and now I have been with the same company for almost 4 years, I was able to track the hackers activity, block them and reconfigured the includes folder as well as the admin folder.

Now I sit and watch the activity logs for the hackers.
