We're trying to put together a shopping cart for our little store; It's been a bit of a learning curve, as I knew nothing of PHP, but 1 week later, and here were are:
http://funnfroliccouk.powweb.com/
it's a temporary URL which will be replaced in about a week from now.
Feel free to crit the colour scheme; I'm not sure I like it either!
Feel free to place some test orders too.
But really, I'd like everyone to pull some big queries, like typing the letter 'a' in the search box - I'm trying to see if we will still hit limits with the mysql db.
I also realise the category images are missing, but if it seems to function OK, then I can flesh out the bones over the weekend.
Thanks!

yeah, I don't really like the bright red, it seems too flashy for my tastes. The yellow is a nice shade, but doesn't really go with the red.
for the images, you can set require images to false so that if the image file isn't there, it won't try to display it.

OK, image problems partially solved. Colours toned down.
But there's another problem, let me explain:
Once upon a time we had a store with a company called uk2.net, who had a free but unsecure, unbacked up, un-personalisable store.
For example: http://aromauk.com/uk2shop-2.htm (not ours, but that shows the layout).
People came and bought, but one day the system died, and as uk2 don't backup, we thought "stuffit" and went with Oscommerce, and put the store up at: http://www.funnfrolic.co.uk/
Now, we read all the right things to do: We got rid of a lot of the default images, we put a menu in the middle so that any category was, at most, two clicks away. There's a search box, descriptions, the account and checkout process is totally secure...so why aren't people buying on it? Is it the postal prices? Do "specials" as loss leaders work on websites? We don't think they do
Would free postage above a much lower amount help? These are all things we've thought about, but no-one can put it down to one thing as to why the store is not selling as much.
Any thoughts?

That's odd - it WAS working - I've replaced it with a php header location and now it goes to the right place, but it's still slow than it should be.

Your site is as slow as hell!
Get away from UK2, they suck.
They spend more time offering bandwidth to Gamers, (which I like cos I am one) but not enough to help people produce fast loading websites.
Your pings are:
175ms
176ms
174ms
You should be more like 10-40ms max.

As far as ping times go, I can't seem to get anything quicker than 160ms from the UK to the USA.

Just to clarify something: a site ending in .uk does not mean it is hosted in the UK, similarly, a .com site could well be hosted in the UK. I would suspect that the majority of SME websites on shared servers are based in the USA, as they seem to be cheaper and far better than their UK counterparts (shame but true!)
