Hi,

I'm looking for a good alternative to Paypal. I am losing no end of customers at the moment. I'm really looking for some way to process payments without the need for the customer to sign up for an account with the processor.

Kind Regards,

Ken

Use a real credit card merchant account provider. There are tons of them.

Hi,

I offer 2 payment methods

Paypal IPN (you can use a card without signing up) - 3.6% + 20 p per transaction

and Barclays EPDQ - 3%

Im finding that it is a 50 50 split between the two methods - with perhaps EPDQ taking the lead very slightly

Thanks
Now my store is the way I want it - Secure, working well, and good Google Ranks - Thanks to all for the help given.

If you are in a country where its easy to get a merchant account and payment gateway, that is the best way providing you have a monthly turnover of 1000 USD or more.

For smaller shops and start-up shops, total payment services like PayPal, Google Checkout, Nochex and Moneybookers ++++ are a better fit.

I mentioned 2checkout before since they have a low start-up 49 usd and no monthly fees. Their pr. transaction fees are a bit high, but for start-ups and smaller shops it will still be "cheaper" than paying a monthly fee + lower transaction fees AND 2checkout is also available for merchants in any country world wide.

Thanks so much for the replies :)

I'm based in the UK, sorry should have stated that in my first post.

My turnover is just under £9,000 a month at the moment. I have been looking at RBS World pay as they seem quite resonable. I currently use Paypal IPN where no sign up is needed, but I still find quite a few cutomers fail to spot that they can pay without the need to sign up with Paypal. Also looked at Google checkout, but there seems to be quite a few people having issues with that.

Really not sure if I should just stick with Paypal?

Thanks again for the input :)

Regards,

Ken

May be worthwhile giving Barclays a call about their EPDQ service which also gives the ability to take card details over the phone.

In the UK you also have to option of going for PayPal Pro, which lets you accept cc on your site without redirecting to the PayPal payment pages at all.

If customers have to go into the PayPal IPN to see that they don't have to sign up, they may simply be assuming that they have to have a PayPal account to use that service. I would add something at the place where they choose their payment option, to clearly indicate that NO account needed! for PayPal IPN. Look at your checkout from a (naive) customer's perspective, and see where they are told that they don't need a PayPal account. The earlier, the better! You might even have it on the front page, if you carry the PayPal logo there.

Moneybookers is a good alternative.
But my personal opinion is that if you do not offer paypal you are missing out as millions of people have paypal and prefer using that method of payments.

The official statistics show that 33% of people that shop on line use PayPal

That is why I started using a card payment gateway - so the other 67% of people that shop on line could buy at my store

I use PayPoint as my gateway and Elavon as my merchant banker - payment via these currently cost me less than half than the fees on PayPal

It's certainly worth looking into - but don't drop PayPal - it doesn't cost anything even if it's not used

Interesting. So this is a merchant account and payment gateway? What does it cost you for regular security audits and other measures to pass PCI-DSS? Is it still cheaper than PayPal?

Hi Phil yes it is, MBs in the UK have suddenly realised that they are losing business to the likes of PayPal and are dropping setup fees - pre PayPal fees were about £450 including the audit - mine cost £50 - my compliance is PCI level 4 (as far as I am aware) - the hoops you have to jump through are neither too high nor too small.

PayPoint as the gateway, processes all card payment and is PCI level one compliant.

This is my first year (should have done it long ago but was put off by the talk of high fees) so what it will cost for any security audit I do not know although none have been charged in the last 4 months.

I do have to pay £40 per month (£20 to each) for processing whether processing takes place or not but this does include any processing fees that occur up to a set amount (i.e PayPoint charges you £20 but that includes the first 350 transactions - Elavon's £20 includes all transaction fees up to that amount at the rates you negotiate with them when you start) that can work out as little as £0.21.5 per transaction or up to about 2% - 2.5% of the transaction value depending on the type of card used. I think when I first started I worked out that I had to take via card services £850 per month to break even with PayPal.

Two great sellers with card services - We NEVER hold your credit card details and you DON'T have to pay with PayPal ;)

The thing is, many professionals in the market tend to give you horror stories of what is needed in order to sell you their product, if you pluck up the courage to shop around you tend to be pleasantly surprised - I know I was

Heh, heh. They'll just wait until you're hooked with low "teaser" fees, and then sock it to you once you're in the boat. Be sure you've read the fine print. At least that's how they work in the States -- maybe bankers still have honor on your side of the Pond? Good luck with the fees, and don't be terribly surprised if they soar after a year :( .

I am interested in this IPN from Paypal. Are there any drawbacks?

PayPal is American, you should apply Phil's criticism (above) on American banks to PayPal.

When I first signed up for PayPal IPN PayPal did indeed take credit cards without opening an account, now this is not so (for me anyway) unless I put their horrible PayPal Express button on each page and break the cart system

Be wary and read the small print - if you can find it!

Moneybookers is another PayPal alternative with smooth and convenient transactional services track. It is free t sign up for Moneybookers account. It charges no fee for receiving amount but for sending money you have to pay 1%. It requires your home address verification.
