Hi, I can't seem to find a way to put my store on vacation for a week or two. Is that possible and if so, how would I do it?

Check in hte Add-Ons section. Search for 'vacation' or 'offline' or 'maintenance.'

If you don't find one with vacation then one of the others can be modified easily enough to show a different status.
Avoid the most asked question. See How to Secure My Site and How do I...?

There are a number of such contributions, as Mark mentioned. I suggest the Disable Checkout instead of the Down for Maintenance. Both will do what you want but the latter will hurt your site with the search engines. It is meant more as a quick off/on situation versus the extended one you are planning.

Thank you Mark and Jack for your replies. It seems the easiest way for me to put my store on vacation is to disable my checkouts and then put a vacation announcement with my re-opening date on my home page. Much appreciated. I hope you both enjoy your evening. Carol

I am using this add on for that purpose.

In the closed mode, the customers and search engines can look around, but for the customers, it won't allow a checkout. I've used it for a couple years now, hitchless. Easy to use.
I am not a professional webmaster or PHP coder by background or training but I will try to help as best I can.
I remember what it was like when I first started with osC. It can be overwhelming.
However, I strongly recommend considering hiring a professional for extensive site modifications, site cleaning, etc.
There are several good pros here on osCommerce. Look around, you'll figure out who they are.

Whichever you end up using, they all offer a way for you to create a message in admin so you don't need to add an annoucement. The code will do it for you.

Hi,
I am totally new to osCommerce and can't find the code in catalog/index.php for step number one. I am using v2.3.1. Will it work?
Thank you!

Unless a contribution has been converted to work with 2.3, it usualy won't. It sounds like the one you are using has not been converted. The best thing to do is ask in its support thread.

@minniemouse2
I am totally agree with Jack_mcs. Putting down website on hold or vacation is not a good idea but disabling check out option or buy now option will be easy to do and beneficial for your site. New visitors and search engines can at least view your products while you are on vacation. I am also planning for vacation in summer days and i'll do the same. Have a nice vacation :)

I would just disable the checkout option if you really want it to go offline when you are on holiday.
But ideally you should have it active all the time so that it is a true 24x7 business.
