Surcharges are a joke. Credit card fees are a cost of doing business. Either mark your items up or give up on trying to be an entrepreneur.
By charging a surcharge, you are showing your customer you are only interested in easy profit and to lazy to build the charge into your price.
Don't claim your industry is too competitive; welcome to the world of International business.
As for stores looking for the 100%+ markup, this only really works in luxury oriented products. This is a competitive world, its to easy to find the same products for less elsewhere.
On a final note, wal-mart does not charge a surcharge for credit cards; neither does any other reputable company at that.
As for Wal-mart's after tax profit, it’s around 3%

I assume you are basing this statement on your own country's laws and ways of doing business.
Please keep in mind that though surcharging is not right for everyone, it is a valid (and 100% legal) way to do business in some countires.
