credit card payment and ssl

as the topic says, is it mandatory to use ssl for credit card payments ? and can i use shared ssl certificate ?

If your site processes or stores CC info you must be PCI Compliant ( <= it's a link, click it to read more).

As long as you use a credit card processor that uses the methodology that the customer is transferred to their own site to complete the credit card transaction then no, you do not absolutely need one, but your customers will demand it. In this case you can use a shared one.
