Or how far have you got into the install

originally after it was installed i had a page of oscommerce when i typed in my web address, i then tried to upload the catalog, i did that but originally i think it was in the wrong folder. I read to put it in /public_html,www,htdocs so i moved it to there and now i cant see anything on the page at all, im just lost from here....

Dawn,

Once the OSC files are on your server, you have to run catalog>install> and go through the configuration process that tells OSC where the database is and the associated passwords you will need to access the admin section.

Can you confirm with your MySQL that the database and tables are created.
You should be able to get to your shop with the link siteaddress/catalog.

Also, check your configure.h in the catalog folder and see if the password, database name etc matches what you have in your MySQL.

Typical rookie mistake (MINE). You must upload the INSTALL directory under the directory where you uploaded the entire package.
EX: hattp://www.yourdomain/catalog/install

Sorry about that

BINGO! Just upload CATALOG to your main directory and all the files you need will be uploaded at that time. Then go http://www.yourdomain/catalog/install and it should walk you through the entire process with little or no trouble.
Of course MINE didn't do that, but I have a problem that no one (apparently ) has and I can't get it fixed to save my BOOFER.

I was the one making the rookie mistake, not you. I forgot to include the full path. Hope it is working now.

Why ask for trouble? Just upload to public_html. Once you do that you should be able to log on to www.jewelry-for-sale.com/catalog/install and be up and running within minutes if all goes well.

ah ok. i printed out the instruction manual and thats where it told me to put it... ill give it another go straight into the html - one question though steven if thats ok, i have another couple of sites that down the track when i work all this out i want to put it on also, will this make a difference that the catalog already exists in the public_html?

I'm almost certain I don't understand that question, but do you mean you want to install the program on other domains outside jewelrey-for-sale.com?

You can just install it once on your main site and simply let other sites link to it at jewelry-for-sale.com.
If that is your question.

For example: I can put a link on MY site linking to your store. When people click on the l ink they will shoot straight to YOUR store. If that is what you mean, you only need to install it once.

If you mean you are going to have more than one separate store, then you must install each store in a different directory. Just name each directory differently: public_html/catalog/install AND public_html/store2/catalog/install.

It is my understanding that oscommerce works best if installed in a directory called 'category', and that you cannot install two in the same directory.
