Go to "catalog/includes/column_left.php"
Comment out whichever box you don't want to show on your page. Por ejemplo: If you see the following, "require(DIR_WS_BOXES . 'whats_new.php');" and do not want it then change it to, "// require(DIR_WS_BOXES . 'whats_new.php');"

@Funk: Thanks alot bro! Worked!
Any chance U can also tell me what I may be overlooking as I attempt to change the text on my frontpage?
I use the admin file manager to edit the en_US.xml file but it doesn't reflect on the site?

Don't edit the XML file - in admin go to: Configuration->Languages and click on the 'English (Default)' on the left (NOT the edit icon on the right!) - you can change all the text in there.

If U edit something in the language xml file and then u upload this, the changes will happen, after u import the language in admin -> language
