I currently have a splash page on my site which i have for SEO reason. Can someone please tell me if this is a good idea or not?
also does it really matter if my site is placed in the catalog folder? I have read statements made on these forums that sugguest search engines dont like it!

thanks!

Splash pages generally hurt a site in regards to SEO and usually serve very little purpose otherwise. It should be removed if it isn't needed. It is possible that it is highly optimized though and it may help you in that case.

Your site can rank well if it is in the catalog directory but it may take longer since the search engines will only go down so many levels on each search. Anything past three levels may not get indexed.  Since the catalog directory adds one level itself, some pages may not be reached.

Yes, Search Engines do not like going passed 3rd layer, but if its done correctly and you spend some time making a really good Site Map for the bots to follow you should have no problem having a fully indexed page.

There are several sitemap contributions.

I like chemo's google sitemap.

BTW most people (shoppers) don't like spash pages as well. Especially if they are on dailup.
Backup before making changes. Backup before making changes! Backup before making changes!!

You did do a backup? eh?

Why not make it an option? eg. - Click here to view splash page - then if people want to see it they can but they are not forced to. It is a bit like a youtube video embedded in your page. If you click the Play button then you get to see it otherwise just see the still image.
