back in april there was a news bit about a company in toronto / mississauga that worked similarly to canada post, only faster and cheaper. the reason they were in the news is canada post was threatening to basically put them out of business for some reason or another.

does anyone know the name of this company or know of any alternatives to send SMALL packages to the usa / overseas? (not something like fedex, ups, purolator, etc.)

canada post's rates are abnormally high for the type of service you receive in exchange....

Canpar has been making a push into shipping to the USA but they use FedEx for the deliveries and brokerage.

do they allow the shipments of oversize letters for cheaper (less than $5.95, which is canada post's average for my product)?
i've only received packages from them that were sent from inside canada, so of course i've never had any beef with them

You can check out their web site but they use FedEx for international shipments so I don't know if it will be cheaper.

If an item is up to 250 grams, you can send it for as low as $4.65 with Canada Post so I don't think for light parcels there's someone who's cheaper than CP.

However, for parcels that are above 1kg (expedited parcels - about $15-$16 with CP to the US), Fedex is a bit cheaper but you do have to pay $2 if you send something to a residental address.

I was just at FedEx yesterday wanting to ship a package... quoted cost on the phone was $16.59 by FedEx ground 3 days to the US. Over $30 quoted for expedited via CP.

But here's the thing... drove all the way to FedEx because to have FedEx pick up it's like another $3 and you need to book 24 hours in advance. Anyways, I get there and now they want me to sign a form to agree to pay the $25 customs fees if the package will require customs clearance. Forget that... was still cheaper to ship CP.

Be careful with FedEx as there is all these hidden costs... at least with FedEx ground which is really the only service that is affordable.

There's got to be another option to ship to the US. It's too expensive and we just can't seem to compete with other US competitors.

I've heard of people driving over the boarder and using USPS or UPS to deliver packages. Now I'm also looking at a fulfillment service in the US to do the shipping for me.

If anyone else has any other ideas, let us know.

It's not cool when you promote yourself? Actually, I think it is cool and imperative to promote yourself, that's the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard. The guy has the same first name as me, great! And??

Anyhow, I tried them for a couple of weeks, it worked great, but I'm taking my own items across the border now. I checked back here to see if there were any additional updates on other options too, but all we have is Ryan M. the genius who doesn't trust new companies. Thanks for the info.

you signed up to this board just to tell people to stray away from his business? are you a competitor? if so, post your stuff so we can judge ourselves who's better than canada post... i'm not picky :D

fedex is ridiculous. ups is just as bad, but i've never had to sign a waiver to accept brokerage fees, though i have noticed random customers (small to large, they have no preference) are being slapped with taxes - which is totally not cool...!

That's funny. That post was by Ryan McKegney who works for Redflagdeals (Clear Sky Media) who's done quite a bit of his own promoting from websites to tweets. He's got a very successful website though so good for him, it was obviously the right thing, but a little ironic to bash someone else.

On to topic, I was using ShipUSA a few years back with great success, I've come back as I'm shipping again but looks like they closed up shop, they're doing some kind of Asia shipping consolidation now. Does anyone know any alternate companies?

I have a few hundred small packages per month, nothing huge... They're all about 30g each on average. It's incredibly annoying that to send it to the US costs $6-7+ for Canada Post Airmail, but less than a buck for someone to send that same package back to me from the US with essentially the same service!

Please if anyone has a good solution, let me know, even if you have to promote yourself ;) !

Hi, we run a mail order company in the east end of Toronto and recently switched our shipping to the USA from Canada Post (Small packets air USA). We found a new company operasting out of Markham called "Ship From Here"(.com), so far we have used them for three weeks and are having great results at ccomparable prices. They have a website up and running, this is more for individual shipping but use the "contact page to get in touch with their sales people. We deal with Rick DeGemmis - tell him Adrian Dobson sent you.
