Well, in spite of the fact that I've ripped my hair out a few times while getting my shop configured, I found out that I really like working with coding. (even though I still can't figure out how using a text editor makes finding the errors easier  )

So, now I want to learn more about PHP and coding in general. I don't have the time or the money to take a class. Are there any books you would reccomend to get me started? I am really a beginner, with only even a limited knowledge of HTML. (I"m thinking I should get a good working knowledge of that first?)

Also, this might seem like a stupid question, but when I install it on my computer, should I install PHP4 or PHP5? I know of course that I would want to learn the latest version, I only ask because OSC uses 4, and I wonder if I should be using the same when I'm practicing.

3 good books... you might find them hard work at first but persist and you will get there
web databse applications with PHP & MYSQL - publisher OREILLY
PROGRAMMING PHP - publisher OREILLY
database driven websites using php and mysql - publisher SITEPOINT.

I would learn php4 to start with i think most hosting companys use php4 and have not yet updated to php5

i've been polishing some newfound skills lately too. i don't have the patience to read a book so i hit the programming forums and ask for help when i can't figure something out

php is turning out to be a newfound hobby :) well, the more simpler stuff anyway.. for now.
