I was searching high and low for the place to insert the meta tags in the index.php page.
Couldn't find anything.
Help would be appreciated, thanks.

Between the <head> and </head> tags

I tried that but when I check in the 'page source' it don't show.

You have to insert them into almost every file in your root directory. Installing the Header Tags contribution is a better way to do it IMO.
